Brew at the L.A. Zoo!

Haven’t been to the zoo since your third grade field trip?  The Brew Zoo was definitely different from your 3rd grade school field trip.  On Friday, August 12th Beers in Paradise attended the 1st Annual Brew at the L.A. Zoo. Brewer’s from all around Los Angeles and surrounding counties where present pouring to over two thousand thirsty craft beer drinkers. It was an absolute perfect evening for great craft beers and a walk in the zoo, surrounded by wildlife, such as the orangutans and elephants.  You might get to see a few monkeys at the bar, but here they were climbing the ropes, surrounded by trees. As we stood in line to get a taste of Bootlegger’s freshly tapped Plum Riot, a curious Orangutan graced us with his presence from inside their habitat.  You don’t see that every day while drinking a great craft beer!

We also had an opportunity to talk to L.A. Zoo’s Gina Dartt who is in PR and Marketing for the zoo and an instrumental organizer of Brew at the L.A. Zoo. Not only does she love animals, Gina is also a big fan of craft beer and home brewing. After three years of extensive research that included her going to Denver and experiencing their Brew at the Zoo, a concept that has already been popular nationwide, she was finally given the green light to bring it here to L.A. Her goal was to incorporate both new members of the 21 and over age to visit the zoo and get them familiarized with local breweries, which were handpicked by Dartt. In our opinion, the goal was met and we hope she gets many more green lights.

The park was divided into 4 parts that included 4 to 6 breweries as well as a live band to enjoy some music. It’s still undecided which band won the animals’ choice award (There were no real awards given out).   Along with the brews and bands, there was an assortment of pub style food throughout the park, ranging from salty to sweet.  Unfortunately, due to the overwhelming crowd and lines, we didn’t get a chance to taste all the brews.  Maybe they’ll double it next year, since they had such a great turn out.
